Usually, reviews of movies and shows and books are done by people who have paid attention to such material.
This review breaks new ground. It is a review of something of which I've only caught random bits and pieces.
You see, this summer, stepson has been blaring a television show called "Supernatural." Using only a Netflix subscription and the Roku device I was given for Father's Day, he now has access to a ka-jillion episodes of this program, and he is using part of his summer to consume them on our television set.
I have usually been in another room, trying to write, do dishes, or other responsible adult things.
But "Supernatural" is hard to tune out.
First off, there is the screaming. Lots of it. "That's because of all the people being murdered," says stepson.
Second off, the dialogue, which sounds like the result of using a screenplay-writing program with a thousand of the most commonly used sentences in dramatic television shows: "So what happens now?" "I walk away. And my brother comes with me."
Third off, the plot. From what I've been able to piece together (stepson has been helpful here), it's about demons, angels, God, the Apocalypse, and lots of violence.
There are also two human brothers who die over and over again.
The demons are mean and bad, and they inhabit people's bodies. Mostly attractive people's bodies. And once they do inhabit those bodies, they start to sound evil. If this were a podcast I could do a pretty good imitation of them.
The angels are also mean and bad, but more passive-aggressive, and their relationship with God is problematic. Either God is "dead" (this according to my stepson), not interested in the conflict, keeping hands off, or some other plot device that allows the drama to be drawn out into a ka-jillion episodes.
Of course there was that one episode where someone (an angel?) said, "What? You think the man upstairs was going to allow the seals to be broken all on their own? Ha!"
In some of the episodes, some of the people are trying to stave off the Apocalypse, which is some vague and terrible outcome that I don't think involves the resurrection of the dead and the Last Judgment, but I could be wrong.
In one of the episodes stepson watched recently, however, there is a demon (I think), who says, "Ha! The Apocalypse? In my book, that's like Sunday dinner."
Does this sound like a messy stew that should have been cancelled after one season? Au contraire, mon frère. IMDB.com users rate it at 8.5 out of 10.
In any case, I think it's wonderful that stepson is hooked on a show with religious content.
Who else out there loves "Supernatural"? Enlighten me about why. Despite my snark, I am actually interested. Though not interested enough to sit down and watch a whole episode.
