I am embarrassed to report that I had to look up the line the young man was PROBABLY thinking of when he said that. "Oh beautiful for spacious skies," which I used, as a kid, to hear as "for gracious skies"...

But I also had to laugh because his answer seemed almost like a comment on how Spanish is becoming our second language.


You should be a linguist. That is exactly what he was doing with that "gracias." I'm sure that's what it was. Because if someone doesn't know "America" they will default to "America the Beautiful." And I was thinking the guy just threw it on purpose for the entertainment value. Maybe a producer told him to throw it really bad, I thought.

Good one, as the yuppies say.
