This is nicely said. But I remember those years as a kind of descent into irony. It was the beginning of the crisis in journalism. Newspapers and magazines were fat, but filled with celebrity gossip and snark. I suppose that's what happens when people have nothing serious to worry about.

One thing I didn't mention was the Gulf War in 1991, which was also a beginning of our involvement with Iraq. 1993 was the year I got my first email account and saw my first web page using the Mosaic browser.

This is a great video about the Internet in 1981:

Well done, David. A world on the precipice of change, but a world in which school and learning are still relevant.
Regarding writing, I met Ron Hansen, one of my favorite writers, in Atlanta some years ago.I knew he taught in college and that his writing's following was still growing. When I asked him if he was able to write full time, he gave me an odd look and said, "Well, yeah. But who would want to?"

Not to mention our own Doris Betts, who once said that she wouldn't know what to do if she had to write full time. The economic necessity of a book a year (about which Swainston also complains) would have paralyzed her, she said.
